Making the Case: Why Philanthropy Planning Should Be Part of Your Advisory Practice

Keynote

Erinn Andrews, Founder & CEO, Give Team

In this session, participants will learn why it’s important to discuss charitable planning with their clients. We will review research on what advisors think about their clients’ charitable needs, priorities, and challenges, and then examine how that differs from what clients actually think. Understanding this disconnect is the first step for advisors who want to build a holistic financial planning practice that best supports their clients. We will discuss today’s massive wealth transfer, the mindset of Millennials, and how philanthropic planning can serve as an excellent engagement tool for younger generations. Finally, we will review why talking about charitable planning with clients is good for advisors and their business, and why it’s good for clients.

Trends Across the Philanthropy Sector

Keynote

Erinn Andrews, Founder & CEO, Give Team

In this session, participants will learn about the latest trends in charitable giving with a particular deep dive on the rise in popularity of Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) especially over the last decade. Reviewing the latest research on DAFs, we will look at the breakdown of giving account sizes, types of donated assets, payout rates, and more. Participants will learn about three DAF donor archetypes to understand the different ways donors are using these accounts to enact their charitable priorities. Lastly, we will look at donor characteristics by donor “segment”: donors who fall in the top 1% of givers, top 2-10% of givers, and everyday givers, looking at their life stage, psychology, behavior, needs, and opportunities for advisors to support these different clients.
